Narrating the Cracks is a double-channel video essay that question the tight relationship between social administration and environmental conditions of the Southern Alps region.
Using wood as a case study, the project seeks to underline the indissoluble symbiosis between socio and eco-systemical processes. Within the context of the research, climate change covers the dual role of cause and caused in its already started path towards the subversion of contemporary human forms of government.
Fragments of burnt wood are collected and scanned to transform the cracks and textures caused by combustion into digital mountain slopes. The Alpine topography is thus derived from a local element that plays a role in the region both in hydrogeological stabilisation and in communities political and energy independence.
Using procedural modelling, these surfaces get repurposed generating the local forest ecosystem in the same configuration of forest density and age structure that makes the slopes of Trentino as characteristic as they are vulnerable to meteorological and ecosystemic changes. The digital simulation thus recreates the same metamorphosis that climate change is causing in these environments.
